The DSC (PTC1640U) is a plug-in AC power transformer rated 16.5 VAC at 40 VA. It powers DSC PowerSeries alarm panels (and compatible Honeywell VISTA-series panels) from a standard 120 VAC wall outlet.
The PTC1640U is an intrusion-panel transformer. Therefore, it powers DSC PowerSeries and similar burglary panels — not fire alarm control units.
First, the transformer plugs directly into a non-grounded 120 VAC outlet. In addition, a built-in PTC (resettable thermal cutoff) protects against overcurrent without blowing a fuse. As a result, brief overloads recover automatically once power is removed. Furthermore, an integrated LED indicates that AC power is present.

Compatibility
First, the PTC1640U powers DSC PowerSeries hardwired control panels. In addition, it is commonly used with Honeywell VISTA-series panels that accept a 16.5 VAC / 40 VA feed. Also, confirm your panel’s transformer requirement before substituting; some panels require 18 VAC or 24 VAC instead.
Important Application Note
The PTC1640U is an intrusion-panel plug-in transformer. It is not a UL 864 fire-alarm power supply. Therefore, do not use it to power a UL 864-listed fire alarm control unit. For fire alarm power, specify a UL 864-listed transformer or PSU matched to the FACP.
