Notifier FlashScan Detector Guide: FSP-951, FDBZ-992 & Compatible Bases

What Is Notifier FlashScan Technology?

Notifier’s FlashScan is a high-speed communication protocol used on Notifier’s Signaling Line Circuits (SLC loops). Unlike standard NFPA 72 addressable protocols that poll devices every few seconds, FlashScan scans up to 159 devices per loop in as little as 3.9 seconds — roughly 10 times faster than many conventional addressable systems.

This speed advantage translates directly into faster alarm response, more responsive trouble reporting, and reduced false alarm investigation time. FlashScan detectors are compatible with the full Notifier ONYX panel family (NFS2-3030, NFS-3030, NFS-320) and are the most widely used Notifier devices in commercial fire alarm installations.

FSP-951: The Industry’s Most Popular Notifier Smoke Detector

The FSP-951 is Notifier’s flagship addressable photoelectric smoke detector and arguably the most commonly installed intelligent smoke detector in North America. It uses a forward-scattering light chamber to detect visible smoke particles from slow, smoldering fires — the most common type of commercial fire.

FSP-951 Key Features

  • Plug-in, twist-lock design for tool-free installation and removal
  • Stores up to 20 days of drift compensation history in onboard EEPROM
  • Dual LED indicators visible 360° for easy status check during walk-tests
  • Compatible with B200S, B210LP, B501BH, and BSPL-2 bases
  • FlashScan and CLIP (conventional) dual-protocol operation
  • Self-diagnostic circuitry with automatic drift compensation alerts

The FSP-951 is drop-in compatible with all standard Notifier detector bases, making replacements straightforward — no rewiring required as long as the base is undamaged.

FDBZ-992: Combination Smoke/Heat Detector

The FDBZ-992 is Notifier’s intelligent combination detector, integrating both photoelectric smoke sensing and fixed/rate-of-rise heat detection in a single plug-in unit. It’s particularly valuable in environments where either smoke or heat alone could produce nuisance alarms — commercial kitchens near alarm zones, server rooms, or areas with intermittent dust or steam.

FDBZ-992 Key Features

  • Dual-sensor design reduces nuisance alarms while maintaining high sensitivity
  • 135°F (57°C) fixed temperature and rate-of-rise heat sensing
  • Individually addressable on Notifier FlashScan SLC loop
  • Same plug-in base compatibility as FSP-951 (B200S, B210LP, BSPL-2)
  • UL Listed for use on Notifier NFS2-3030, NFS-3030, and NFS-320 panels

FSD-751: Duct Smoke Detector

The FSD-751 is Notifier’s addressable duct smoke detector housing, designed to mount in HVAC ducts to detect smoke in circulated air before it spreads throughout a building. The FSD-751 housing accepts plug-in FlashScan detector heads (typically the FSP-951 or FDX-551R) and provides sampling tube inlets for duct air sampling.

When to Replace FSD-751 Detectors

NFPA 72 requires annual sensitivity testing for all smoke detectors, including duct detectors. An FSD-751 unit should be replaced when:

  • The detector head reports out-of-range sensitivity
  • The housing is physically damaged or the sampling tubes are clogged
  • The unit fails annual inspection or self-test routines
  • The detector is more than 10 years old (NFPA 72 recommends replacement)

Compatible Detector Bases

All Notifier FlashScan plug-in detectors require a compatible base. The base stays wired in the ceiling; the detector head twists on and off for testing, cleaning, and replacement. Key bases include:

  • B200S – Standard low-profile base, the most common Notifier base
  • B210LP – Low-profile base with integral LED for enhanced visibility
  • BSPL-2 – Surface mount base for surface-mounted conduit runs
  • B501BH – Standard base with built-in sounder element
  • B224RB – Relay base for local control output

Always verify base compatibility before ordering replacement detectors. The FSP-951 and FDBZ-992 share base compatibility, so a system originally equipped with FSP-951 detectors can accept FDBZ-992 replacements on the same bases.

Maintenance Tips for Notifier FlashScan Detectors

  • Test sensitivity annually using the Notifier SWIFT wireless programmer or a calibrated test instrument per NFPA 72 Section 14.4
  • Clean detectors every 1–2 years in dusty environments using compressed air and the detector maintenance kit
  • Check drift compensation status in the panel event log — a “Maintenance Alert” signal means the detector is compensating for accumulated contamination
  • Replace at 10 years or sooner if sensitivity tests show out-of-spec readings
  • Keep spare detectors on hand — having a few FSP-951s in stock means a failed detector can be replaced same-day rather than leaving a zone offline
