The Edwards 869STRB-N5 is an indoor flush-mount electronic horn-strobe with a BLUE lens, designed to run on 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Specifically, it is part of Edwards Signaling’s 860-Series industrial signaling line. As a result, you get a combined audible and visible signal for general industrial, process, and access-control signaling — not fire-alarm notification.

First, the 869STRB-N5 houses a xenon strobe and an electronic horn in a single gray engineered-thermoplastic enclosure. Then both the horn and the strobe can be wired on the same 120 VAC circuit OR on independent 120 VAC circuits. Therefore, the user can run them together (for evacuation-style signaling) or separately (e.g., horn for one event, strobe for another).

120 VAC Operation — Critical Install Note

However, this is a 120 V AC line-voltage appliance — NOT a low-voltage 24 V device. Specifically, the N5 suffix in the Edwards 860-Series naming convention denotes 120 V 50/60 Hz operation. Therefore, the 869STRB-N5 wires to a standard branch-circuit 120 V AC source, not to a fire-alarm NAC.

Also, in Edwards’s broader Adaptabeacon and 860-Series catalog, the N5 voltage code is consistent across the 48 / 50 / 51 / 52 / 53 / 869 product families. As a result, any LSC SKU ending in -N5 is a 120 V AC device. Confirm voltage compatibility before specifying.

860-Series Naming Decoder

Furthermore, the 869STR series naming follows a consistent convention. Specifically:

  • 867STR — indoor SURFACE mount
  • 868STR — outdoor surface mount
  • 869STR — indoor FLUSH or panel mount
  • Lens color: C = Clear, R = Red, G = Green, B = Blue, A = Amber
  • Voltage: N5 = 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz; AQ = 24 V AC/DC

Therefore, the 869STRB-N5 decodes to: 869STR (indoor flush) + B (Blue) + N5 (120 V AC).

Verified Electrical Specifications

  • Operating voltage: 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz
  • Horn current: 24 mA @ 120 VAC
  • Strobe current: 87 mA @ 120 VAC
  • Flash rate: approximately 1 fps
  • Sound level: 90 dBA nominal at 10 ft (3.05 m) in anechoic chamber

However, note that the horn and strobe currents are additive when connected in parallel. As a result, design branch-circuit loading and conductor sizing around horn+strobe combined.

Operating Environment

Specifically, the 869STRB-N5 is rated for indoor use:

  • Temperature: 32 to 120°F (0 to 49°C)
  • Humidity: 85% relative humidity @ 86°F (30°C)

Furthermore, for outdoor or harsh-environment installations, use the 869-WPB weatherproof back box. As a result, the appliance carries the outdoor operating spec: -31 to 150°F (-35 to 66°C), 95% RH @ 30°C.

Mounting

Also, the 869STRB-N5 is designed to mount in a standard 4-inch (102 mm) square electrical box with an extension ring providing a total minimum depth of 3 inches (76 mm). Therefore, factor the deep box into the rough-in package.

What This Part Is Not

However, the 869STRB-N5 is NOT a fire-alarm notification appliance. Specifically, it carries UL 1638 (general visible signaling) and UL 464 (general audible signaling), NOT UL 1971 (fire-alarm visible notification for the hearing impaired). Therefore, use the 869STRB-N5 for industrial signaling — not as a substitute for a fire-alarm horn-strobe.

Also, the blue lens is a common color choice for “info,” “status,” or “process” signaling. As a result, the 869STRB-N5 is frequently specified for security alerts, process status, machine-state notification, and similar non-fire-evacuation applications.

Furthermore, the 869STRB-N5 is also NOT a 24 V appliance. Therefore, do not connect it to a 24 V NAC or to a 24 V control panel output — the appliance will not work and may be damaged. The 24 V equivalent is the 869STRB-AQ.
