Edwards (965-1A-8SW) 8 inch cone speaker (70vrms) , square – white

The Edwards 965-1A-8SW is an 8-inch square white surface-mount ceiling speaker for 70 Vrms fire-alarm voice-communication audio circuits. Specifically, it is the speaker-only (no strobe) 8-inch variant in the EST 965 Series. Furthermore, the larger cone offers a wider frequency response for improved audibility in larger or more reverberant rooms.

First, the speaker cone is 8-inch with sealed-back construction. Then the 12-1/2 inch (318 mm) steel baffle carries a baked white epoxy-polyester powder coat finish. As a result, the speaker delivers clear, intelligible voice and tone output in hotels, malls, airports, hospitals, and other transient-occupancy buildings.

Field-Selectable Wattage Taps

Specifically, the 965-1A-8SW offers wattage taps for on-site output flexibility. Therefore, output is tunable without swapping speakers. Per the Edwards 8-inch datasheet (85001-0289), the 8-inch series provides taps from 1/2 W to 4 W. Also, the tap is selected via a slide-on connector at the speaker terminal block.

Specifically, the 965-1A-8SW is rated for indoor use only and mounts in a square surface configuration. Therefore, the recommended back box is the Edwards 960A-8SS square surface box. As a result, this combination forms a complete square surface install for the 8-inch speaker.

Also, if a flush install is preferred, choose the round 965-1A-8RW with the 960A-8RF round flush box instead. In addition, the alternate mounting is a standard North American 4-inch square electrical box with a 1-1/2 inch extension ring.

However, the 965-1A-8SW is a speaker-only device. Specifically, it does NOT include a strobe. Therefore, for a combined audible-and-visible appliance in the 8-inch square white form factor, choose the 965-5A-8SW / -7A-8SW / -3A-8SW / -4A-8SW / -8A-8SW speaker-strobe variants instead.

Also, the 965 Series targets 70 Vrms audio circuits. As a result, do NOT wire it to a 25 Vrms circuit — for 25 V audio, use the 964-1A-8SW instead.
