The Simplex 2084-9017 is a surface-mount firefighter telephone assembly with a locked, break-rod door and an armored push-to-talk handset. Specifically, it is part of the Simplex 2084 series of remote firefighter telephones. Firefighter telephone systems give first responders a dedicated two-way voice channel inside a building.

Firefighters rely on these phones when radio communications inside a structure are unreliable. For example, large concrete buildings, parking decks, and high-rise stairwells often block portable radio signals. As a result, code requires a hardwired firefighter telephone system in many commercial buildings. Therefore, the 2084-9017 jack station is installed at strategic locations such as elevator lobbies and stairwell landings.

How the Simplex 2084-9017 break-rod door works

A glass break-rod sits behind the door handle. First, the responder pulls the handle. Then the rod breaks and the door swings open. As a result, the armored handset is immediately available for use. In addition, the locked door prevents tampering between events while leaving the phone accessible to authorized personnel during an alarm or test.

  • Wiring: dedicated two-wire circuit (twisted, shielded pair recommended to minimize electrical noise)

  • Application: two-way communications during active firefighting, fire alarm investigation, and system inspection or test

Common applications

The 2084-9017 typically installs in elevator lobbies, stairwell landings, mechanical rooms, and other locations identified on the building’s firefighter telephone riser. Also, the surface-mount form factor lets a contractor add the device to an existing structure without a recessed back-box rough-in. Furthermore, the armored cable resists hand-pulling damage during emergency use.
