Edwards (702U) 6 inch universal base, 700 series /w 6 terminals for all heads

The Edwards 702U is the six-terminal universal mounting base for the ESL 700 Series conventional smoke and heat detectors. Specifically, it is the 6-inch diameter base that accepts every 700 Series detector head except the high-voltage 731U. As a result, one base type covers most 700 Series retrofit and new-install scenarios.

First, the 702U screws to the electrical box. Then the field wiring lands on six numbered terminals inside the base. Finally, the detector head twists into the base — clockwise to seat, an additional 15° to lock — opening the continuity switch in the process.

Compatible 700 Series Detector Heads

Furthermore, the 702U accepts the full range of low-voltage ESL 700 Series heads. Specifically, that includes:

• 711U — two-wire photoelectric smoke detector
• 713-5U — two-wire rate-of-rise + 135°F fixed-temperature heat detector
• 721U — two-wire photoelectric with remote test input and remote LED output
• 721UT — two-wire photoelectric + rate-of-rise heat with remote test and LED
• 741U — four-wire photoelectric with alarm relay and remote LED
• 741UT — four-wire photoelectric + rate-of-rise heat with alarm relay and remote LED

However, the 702U is NOT for the 731U. The 731U includes a 120 VAC auxiliary relay. Therefore, it must use the 702RU base, which has a plastic protrusion that physically prevents the low-voltage 711U/721U/741U heads from being inserted into a high-voltage base.

Mounting Box Compatibility

Also, the 702U mounts to a wide range of electrical boxes:

• Standard single-gang box
• 4-inch square box (round or octagonal)
• 3.5-inch octagonal box
• WIREMOLD 5738A or 5739 fixture boxes

In addition, the base may be mounted directly without an electrical box where the Authority Having Jurisdiction approves it.

Three-Part Base Assembly

Specifically, the 6-inch diameter base ships as three parts: the base body, a foam gasket, and a snap-on base cover that conceals the mounting screws. Therefore, the installer can wire the base, then snap the cover on for a clean visual finish.

Also, each detector head has a breakaway locking tab. As a result, the installer can choose between tool-free head removal (tab intact) or anti-tamper installation (tab snapped off, removal requires a small screwdriver in the side slot).

Legacy Status

However, the 702U is a legacy ESL 700 Series part. Specifically, the broader 700 Series family has been superseded by Edwards’ EC2 and KC2 conventional detector lines for new installs. Therefore, order the 702U for retrofit and replacement on existing 700 Series systems.
