The Edwards 89STRR-N5 is an indoor flush-mount xenon strobe with a red lens, operating on 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Specifically, it belongs to the Edwards 89-Series industrial strobe line. Furthermore, it provides a distinctive visual signal for timing, paging, process-control, general alarm, and warning applications.
First, the housing is gray engineered thermoplastic. Then the unit mounts on a standard single-gang electrical box. As a result, installation is simple and works in most existing rough-in configurations.
89-Series Naming Decoder
Furthermore, the 89-Series follows a consistent convention. Specifically:
- 89STR — indoor FLUSH mount (single-gang box)
- 89SMSTR — indoor SURFACE mount (with supplied surface box)
- Lens color: C = Clear, R = Red, G = Green, B = Blue, A = Amber
- Voltage: AQ = 24 V AC/DC; N5 = 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz
Therefore, 89STRR-N5 decodes to: 89STR (indoor flush) + R (red lens) + N5 (120 V AC).
Verified Electrical Specifications
- Operating voltage: 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz
- Current draw: 90 mA
- Light source: Xenon strobe tube
- Red-lens effective light output: 21 cd per UL 1638
- Peak candela: 300,000 cd
- Strobe tube life: approximately 1,000 hours
Operating Environment and Mounting
Specifically, the 89STRR-N5 is rated for indoor use only:
- Temperature: 32 to 120°F (0 to 49°C)
- Humidity: 85% relative humidity at 86°F (30°C)
Also, the unit mounts to a single-gang electrical box or equivalent. As a result, dimensions are approximately 5.0 in (127 mm) H by 3-3/8 in (86 mm) W. Therefore, the device sits flush with most standard architectural wall finishes.
Typical Applications
Furthermore, the 89-Series is industrial signaling for BAS and HVAC environments. Therefore, common deployment includes:
- Process timing and shift signaling
- Paging and call-light annunciation
- General industrial alarm and warning
- Building automation and HVAC alarm states

What This Part Is Not
However, the 89STRR-N5 is NOT a fire-alarm visible-notification appliance. Specifically, it carries UL 1638 (general visible signaling) — NOT UL 1971 (fire-alarm visible notification for the hearing impaired). Therefore, the candela rating is NOT field-selectable, and the 21 cd red-lens output does not meet typical NFPA 72 fire-alarm strobe candela requirements.
Also, the original product copy claimed “field-selectable candela ratings (15, 30, 75, 110 cd)” and “UL 1971 listed” — both are incorrect. As a result, do not specify the 89STRR-N5 as a fire-alarm strobe substitute.
Voltage Caution
Specifically, the N5 suffix means 120 V AC. Therefore, do NOT wire the 89STRR-N5 to a 24 V notification appliance circuit. For 24 V operation, use the 89STRR-AQ instead.
