POTTER (CSS-25) Coilkeeper solenoid supervisory switch

The Potter CSS-25 CoilKeeper is a solenoid supervisory switch for preaction and deluge sprinkler systems. First, NFPA 13 requires this supervision on releasing solenoid valves. In addition, the CSS-25 model serves 22-31 watt solenoid coils.

The unit monitors the coil electronically through sense feed and sense return wires. Specifically, if a technician lifts the coil off the stem, the CSS-25 activates a normally-open dry-contact output. Therefore, the releasing control panel sees a supervisory condition immediately.

Local LEDs report coil and circuit status at the device. Specifically, green = normal, solid amber = coil removed, and solid red = releasing circuit energized. As a result, technicians can see when the circuit is live before reinstalling a coil.

Furthermore, fault codes flag failed continuity with 4 amber flashes. In addition, 8 amber flashes mean failed inductance and 10 fast flashes mean a shorted or open coil. Therefore, troubleshooting starts at the device rather than the panel.

Specifications and installation

The CSS-25 measures 4.38″W × 4.00″H × 1.90″D and ships at 1.25 lb. Specifically, the enclosure is UV- and impact-resistant polycarbonate, NEMA Type 2 for indoor dry use. In addition, three 1/2″ conduit entrances support flexible routing.

Power is 24 VDC at 20 mA standby and 40 mA in alarm. Furthermore, the dry-contact output is rated 1 A at 30 VDC resistive. Wire range is 12-22 AWG, with maximum sense-loop resistance of 100 ohms.

The CSS-25 is designed for use with 24 V solenoid valves UL listed for releasing service. Also, it can mount directly on the valve or remotely via supplied sense feed and return wires. The unit is not for hazardous locations, and Potter rates the service life at about 10 years.
