The Simplex 2098-9209 is a reconditioned conventional photoelectric smoke detector head. Specifically, it pairs with the Simplex 2098-series two-wire base to form a complete conventional smoke detector. As a result, it extends the service life of legacy Simplex conventional fire alarm zones.
In addition, this unit is professionally reconditioned and functionally tested. Therefore, it offers a budget-friendly alternative to a brand-new conventional detector head when modernization is not yet planned.
How the Simplex 2098-9209 Detects Smoke
First, the photoelectric sensing chamber uses a light source and a photo-detector mounted at an angle. Then, smoke particles entering the chamber scatter light from the source into the detector. As a result, the photo-detector signals an alarm.
Furthermore, the 2098-9209 communicates only by changing its current draw on the conventional loop. Therefore, the panel sees zone-level alarm state, not individual device identity. Unlike addressable detectors, this is a true conventional device.

Compatible Bases
The 2098-9209 was specified to mount on the Simplex 2098-9211 two-wire base. Therefore, if your zone uses a different base, verify the head-to-base mechanical and electrical compatibility before installing. Specifically, addressable bases (such as the 4098-9789) are NOT compatible with this conventional head.
Compatible Simplex Panels
The 2098-9209 is compatible with Simplex conventional initiating device circuits (IDCs). Examples of panels with conventional IDC zones include the Simplex 4006, 4007ES, and certain configurations of the 4010 and 4100ES. However, before ordering, confirm the IDC type at your zone, since some Simplex panels offer both conventional and addressable inputs.
When This Detector Makes Sense
- Restoring a damaged or aged conventional detector in an existing zone
- Adding spare detector positions to an installed 2098-series circuit
- Extending the service life of a legacy Simplex conventional system
- Lower-budget repair before a planned full system modernization
However, if a building is migrating to a modern addressable platform, this is not the right detector. Specifically, modern Simplex addressable systems use 4098-series TrueAlarm sensors, not 2098-series heads.
