PROTECTOWIRE (TR-24) Turnbuckle

The Protectowire TR-24 turnbuckle is a tensioning accessory for Protectowire messenger wire installations. Specifically, the TR-24 attaches one end of a messenger-wire run to a supporting structure. Furthermore, it lets the installer apply tension to the carrier wire after the detector is in place.

Why messenger wire needs a Protectowire TR-24 turnbuckle

Protectowire linear heat detector ships on stainless steel messenger wire with the “-M” suffix. Then the messenger wire spans open bays, cable trays, and outdoor runs. As a result, no continuous mounting surface is required. However, the wire must be tensioned at each end to avoid sag.

The TR-24 turnbuckle sits between the messenger wire and the building structure. Furthermore, threaded eye/hook ends let the installer take up slack progressively. Therefore, the run stays taut and the detector remains in detection geometry.

Materials and ratings

The TR-24 is steel construction with an aluminum casing. In addition, hex 1/4-20 locknuts secure the eye and hook ends. The eye inner diameter measures 9/16″ (14.3 mm). Furthermore, the same dimension applies to the closed-hook bolt I.D.

The temperature rating is −70°F to 300°F (−57°C to 149°C). As a result, the TR-24 fits cold storage, interior, and elevated-ambient applications.

Stainless steel sibling

The TR-24-S is the all-stainless-steel version of the TR-24. Specifically, outdoor and corrosive environments call for the TR-24-S instead. Both turnbuckles share the same 1/4-20 thread and 9/16″ eye dimensions.

Install rules

Maximum detector run length between turnbuckles should not exceed 250 ft (76 m). Also, intermediate fasteners must support the messenger wire every 15–50 ft. Outdoor runs need closer intermediate spacing for snow, ice, and wind.
