The Potter Electric Signal RTS-O is a low-temperature room sensor for dry-pipe sprinkler protection. It closes a normally open contact when room temperature drops below 40°F (4.5°C).
First, the bi-metallic sensor detects the threshold crossing. Then the contact closes and signals the supervisory or monitoring circuit. As a result, the building management or fire alarm system can warn of freeze risk before a dry-pipe valve or water-filled line is damaged. In addition, the switch resets automatically when room temperature climbs back above 40°F.
Potter Electric Signal RTS-O Key Features
- Normally open contact closes below 40°F (4.5°C); resets automatically above 40°F
- Bi-metallic sensor sealed in an epoxy-filled stainless steel case
- White ABS enclosure for clean appearance in finished rooms
- Surface-mount installation with screw terminals
- Complies with NFPA 13 and NFPA 72 requirements for a 40°F room-temperature switch protecting dry-pipe valves
- No periodic maintenance required beyond keeping vent holes clear

Where the RTS-O Is Used
Specifically, the RTS-O is installed in spaces that house dry-pipe sprinkler valves or wet sprinkler piping that could freeze. For example, unheated mechanical rooms, valve rooms, attic spaces, and entry vestibules in cold climates all benefit from a 40°F supervisory switch.
