PROTECTOWIRE (PHSC-172-EPC) Linear Heat Detector alarm temp. 172°F

The Protectowire PHSC-172-EPC is a fixed-temperature digital linear heat detector. Specifically, the cable activates at 172°F (78°C). Furthermore, the EPC jacket uses an extruded polyvinyl chloride outer coating. Also, the combination suits interior commercial and industrial applications.

How the Protectowire PHSC-172-EPC senses heat

The detector consists of two spring-tempered steel conductors. Then each conductor is individually insulated with a heat-sensitive polymer. The two insulated conductors are twisted together. As a result, the polymer pressure keeps them apart at normal temperatures. When any point along the cable reaches the rated 172°F alarm temperature, the polymer yields. Furthermore, the conductors snap together at that point. Therefore, the detector initiates an alarm at the first heated section anywhere along its length.

Environmental ratings

The maximum continuous ambient temperature is 130°F (54°C). Also, the minimum ambient temperature is −40°F (−40°C). The EPC jacket is a durable flame-retardant vinyl. In addition, the jacket protects the conductors from typical interior moisture and abrasion.

Interface and installation

The PHSC-172-EPC must be connected to a compatible Protectowire interface module. Specifically, the CTM-530 or PIM-530 interface module ties the run into the fire alarm panel. Therefore, the cable does not connect directly to an addressable SLC. Furthermore, this two-piece architecture lets the interface module distinguish a real thermal alarm from a mechanical short.

Typical applications

Installers run the PHSC-172-EPC through cable trays, conveyor systems, transformer rooms, and warehouse rack storage. Also, the linear coverage suits spaces where ceiling height or air movement defeats spot detectors.
