Here’s How Businesses Can Prepare for Fire Inspections

Engineer inspecting fire alarm panelDo you own or run a business? If you do, and there’s a fire inspection scheduled for some time in the near future then there are certain things you can do to best prepare for the day and time when your place will be inspected.

Easy Exits

For starters, when preparing for fire inspections, one of the main things to check for are whether or not it’s easy to exit the building in case of a problem inside the building, such as a fire. The technical term for this is “means of egress,” which refers to ways out of a building. With this in mind, check the paths leading to exits. Are they free of clutter? Then check the exit doors and openings. Are they blocked? If so, unblock them. Finally, check the other side of the exits, usually outdoors, to make sure nothing’s in the way there, either. Basically, the path to the exits, the exits and the area outside of the exit doors, openings or windows should all be “clear” of obstructions so that people can get out of a building easily in case of fire or other emergency.

Wiring and Electrical Installations

Next, it’s a good idea to check wiring and electrical installations at your business. Are your electrical boxes, switches and outlets having all their covers in place as intended? Are your extension cords in good shape? Are you using surge protectors connected directly to your outlets as they should be? Are your panels and breakers labeled? These are just some things to consider.

Lack of Debris

Thirdly, is your business tidy and clean? If not, it’s time to get rid of accumulated trash or debris. You should also pay special attention to anything flammable and/or combustible and make sure those items are stored properly.

Properly Maintained Equipment

Finally, have you maintained your fire sprinklers and/or extinguishers? Sprinkler heads should be free of paint or corrosion. Nothing should be attached to them– they shouldn’t be used to hang decorations, for instance. Are your extinguishers present and in good working order or expired?
