The Hochiki SCI is a DCP short-circuit isolator module. It opens the SLC loop during a downstream short to keep the rest of the loop alive.
First, install the SCI between groups of devices on the SLC loop. Then if a short appears, adjacent isolators activate. As a result, only the segment between two tripped SCIs loses communication, while the rest of the loop stays online.
How the Hochiki SCI Works
In Class A wiring, two adjacent isolators bracket the fault. Specifically, the left and right SCIs to the shorted section both trip. However, in Class B wiring only the isolator closest to the short trips, and devices beyond the fault lose communication.
Furthermore, each SCI checks the line at power-up. Then, if normal, it closes its relay automatically. Also, the yellow LED stays off in normal conditions and turns on when the isolator activates. Therefore, the loop self-restores once the short clears.
