The Main Features of a Commercial Fire Alarm System

Commercial Fire Alarm Systems

What do you know about commercial fire alarm systems? What are some of their typical main features

Commercial fire alarm systems utilize smoke detectors to detect smoke from fires. If and when they detect smoke, they set off an audible alarm to warn people in a building that they need to pay attention to something going wrong! And, if they’re able, they’ll vacate the building as quickly as possible to avoid problems.

Then there are CO (carbon monoxide) detectors. Any building with a water heater could be at risk for CO poisoning. If and when fuel is burned incompletely, for whatever reason, carbon monoxide is released. If that CO can’t easily escape an area, and a person breathes it in, they could die! So, CO detectors are important features of commercial fire alarm systems.

Have you seen hand pulls? These are devices that usually hang on a wall inside a building, or on a pedestal outside, that function as their name suggests. If a person notices a fire, they can go to the hand pull and pull that handle down. This triggers an alarm signal to the fire panel, which then activates strobes and sirens, alerting people to the presence of fire. While it might take a while for a smoke detector to “go off,” if and when a person notices a fire problem, they can quickly use a hand pull to warn others of the impending fire.

Finally, commercial fire alarm systems use horns and strobes to get people’s attention that there’s a fire. A horn is used to create a loud warning sound to let people hear that there’s a fire issue while a strobe is a blinking light that serves as a visible cue that there’s a fire issue.
