The Edwards MN-COM1S is a UL 864 listed FireWorks communications module that bridges TCP/IP to RS-232 serial. First, it provides one RJ-45 Ethernet port and one RS-232 serial port. As a result, the module connects a FireWorks workstation to an EST3 control panel over IP infrastructure. The Edwards MN-COM1S is used specifically in MNEC (Mass Notification / Emergency Communications) deployments.
This is a purpose-built fire-alarm gateway, not a general building automation interface. Specifically, the MN-COM1S supports FireWorks-to-EST3 communication only. Therefore, do not specify it for SCADA, BAS, or building management system bridging – different products serve those use cases.
Verified Electrical Specifications
The Edwards MN-COM1S operates on 18 to 28 VDC. Then current draw is 60 mA at nominal voltage. Use the control panel power supply or a regulated 24 VDC supply listed by UL/ULC for fire protective signaling systems. Also, the unit measures 2.5 inches wide by 0.9 inches high by 3.5 inches deep (6.4 x 2.3 x 9.0 cm).
Network Interface
The RJ-45 port supports 10/100 Mbps autonegotiating Ethernet over Category 5 minimum cable. Furthermore, the network interface uses TCP/IP for FireWorks workstation communication. The RS-232C serial port connects directly to the 3-CPU3 in the EST3 control panel. Also, configuration uses a browser-based web interface – no proprietary configuration tool is required.
Mounting
The Edwards MN-COM1S mounts on an MN-BRKT1F (inside an EST3 control panel enclosure) or an MN-BRKT3F (inside an APS6A series power supply enclosure). Specifically, the module slides into mounting tabs on the bracket. As a result, the MN-COM1S sits self-contained inside the FACP or APS cabinet without external enclosure.
Cable Architecture
For installations where the FireWorks workstation is in another room, use the MN-NETSW1 four-port multimode fiber switch as the link between the FireWorks PC and the MN-COM1S. Then the FireWorks computer can be located up to 2 km from the panel via multimode fiber. However, when copper is used, the FireWorks PC must be within 20 feet and in the same room as the MN-NETSW1.
Listings and Operating Environment
The Edwards MN-COM1S carries UL 864 listing for fire protective signaling. Also, the module supports CE; FCC Part 15 Class A; EN50081-2; EN50082-2. Operating environment: 32 to 120 F (0 to 49 C), 0 to 93% RH non-condensing at 90 F (32 C).
