Manual Fire Alarm Pull Station Replacement Guide — Simplex, Edwards & More

What Is a Manual Fire Alarm Pull Station?

A manual fire alarm pull station (also called a manual pull station or pull station) is a wall-mounted device that allows building occupants to manually activate a fire alarm system. When the lever is pulled, it triggers the fire alarm control panel to sound alarms throughout the building.

Pull stations are required by NFPA 72 in nearly all commercial and institutional occupancies — including schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, and industrial facilities. They must be located within 5 feet of each exit door, between 42 and 54 inches from the floor.

Types of Fire Alarm Pull Stations

Single-Action vs. Dual-Action Pull Stations

Single-action pull stations activate with one motion — pulling the lever down. They are the most common type in existing commercial buildings. Dual-action pull stations require two motions to activate (typically lift, then pull), which reduces accidental activations. Dual-action stations are increasingly required in schools, healthcare facilities, and high-traffic public spaces.

Conventional vs. Addressable Pull Stations

Conventional pull stations are wired to a zone circuit — when activated, the panel knows which zone was triggered but not the exact device. Addressable pull stations communicate directly with the fire alarm control panel and report their exact location, enabling faster emergency response.

Simplex Pull Station Replacement Guide

Simplex manufactures some of the most widely installed pull stations in commercial fire alarm systems. Here are the most common Simplex pull station models and their replacements:

  • Simplex 4099-9006 — Addressable dual-action pull station, compatible with Simplex 4100ES and IDNet systems. One of the most-replaced Simplex models.
  • Simplex 4099-9004 — Addressable single-action pull station for 4100ES systems.
  • Simplex 4251-20 — Legacy conventional single-action pull station. Common in older Simplex 4100 systems.

Pull Station Replacement Considerations

Compatibility

Always verify compatibility with your fire alarm control panel before ordering. Addressable pull stations are panel-specific — a Simplex 4099-9006 will not work on a Notifier or Edwards panel. Conventional pull stations are generally more universal.

Contact Configuration

Pull stations come in SPST (single-pole, single-throw), DPST, SPDT, and DPDT configurations. Match the contact configuration to your existing wiring and panel requirements. Most conventional systems use SPST or DPST contacts.

Protect Your Pull Stations with STI Covers

In high-traffic areas or facilities with a history of false alarms, STI Stopper II and Universal Stopper pull station covers add a layer of protection without blocking legitimate use. They activate a local alarm when the cover is lifted, deterring accidental or malicious pulls.
