The System Sensor D4P120 is a conventional 4-wire photoelectric smoke detector. It is part of the System Sensor 4-wire D-series. As a result, it works with conventional fire alarm control panels that supply 4-wire smoke loop power.
The detector uses photoelectric (light-scattering) sensing. In addition, it requires a separate power feed and an alarm initiating loop — that’s what “4-wire” means.
How a 4-Wire Smoke Detector Differs from 2-Wire
A 4-wire detector takes power on a dedicated pair. Then it signals alarm on a separate initiating pair. Specifically, that lets the detector keep operating LEDs, sounders, or relays that 2-wire loop power cannot support.
However, 4-wire detectors require end-of-line supervision on the power pair. Therefore, the installation must include a power-supervision relay or end-of-line module to meet code.
