EDWARDS (4-NET-SMD) Single-mode fiber-optic SFP Network Cont

The Edwards 4-NET-SMD is a bi-directional single-mode fiber-optic SFP network controller for EST4 panels and remote annunciators. Specifically, it carries network data and audio data on a single fiber strand instead of the usual fiber pair.

First, the 4-NET-SMD plugs into an SFP slot on the 4-ANNCPU central processor or an EST4 control panel. In addition, it is one half of a paired link. As a result, every 4-NET-SMD on a project must be matched with a 4-NET-SMU on the far end. Bi-directional traffic shares the one 9/125 µm single-mode fiber between the two cards.

Furthermore, the link supports runs up to 6.2 miles (10 km) between nodes. Therefore, the SMU/SMD pair is well suited to campus and multi-building deployments that need a long single-fiber backbone.

Choosing the Right 4-NET Series SFP

For non-bi-directional links over a fiber pair, use 4-NET-SM (10 km) or 4-NET-SMH (40 km). For multi-mode fiber, use 4-NET-MM. For Cat 5e copper up to 100 m, use 4-NET-CAT. For twisted pair, use 4-NET-TP or 4-NET-TPHC.
