The Edwards GC-S2 is a Genesis Series ceiling-mount life safety speaker in a white finish. First, it delivers voice audio for fire alarm voice evacuation and emergency communications from a low-profile ceiling installation. As a result, the speaker stays unobtrusive while providing clear audio overhead.

Note: the GC-S2 is a legacy SKU. Specifically, it has been REPLACED by the current Edwards GCHFWF-S2 (Genesis High Fidelity ceiling speaker, white, FIRE marking). Therefore, for new installations, specify the GCHFWF-S2; the GC-S2 listing is provided here for service and replacement orders.

Verified Speaker Specifications

The GC-S2 operates on 25 VRMS audio. Then wattage taps select 1/4, 1/2, 1, or 2 W output. Furthermore, sound output at 10 feet (UL 1480 reverberant) ranges from 81 dBA at 1/4 W up to 90 dBA at 2 W. Also, the speaker includes a DC blocking capacitor for electrical supervision of the audio circuit.

Mounting

The GC-S2 mounts flush to a standard North American 4 inch square electrical box, 2-1/8 inches deep. As a result, no extension ring or trim plate is required for a flush ceiling install. Furthermore, the device can also be wall-mounted per UL listing. Dimensions are 6.8 inches diameter by 1.0 inch deep (ultra-slim, about 30 percent thinner than comparable signals).

Listings

The legacy Genesis GC series carries UL 1480 listing for life safety speakers. Then it also meets ULC-S541 for Canadian deployments. However, the modern GCHFWF-S2 replacement includes 520 Hz low-frequency capability for sleeping areas, which the legacy GC-S2 does not.

Wiring

Field wiring terminals accept 18 to 12 AWG wire. As a result, both short runs and long backbone runs are practical. Supervisory voltage maximum is 30 V. Also, the operating environment is indoor only, 32 to 120 F, 0 to 93 percent relative humidity.

Replacement Recommendation

For new installations, specify the Edwards GCHFWF-S2. Specifically, the modern unit adds high-fidelity 520 Hz capability and improved Speech Transmission Index. However, the GC-S2 remains a valid drop-in replacement for existing GC-series ceiling speaker installations.
