The Potter Electric Signal PAV is an automatic float-type air vent for wet-pipe fire sprinkler systems. First, the vent automatically releases trapped air during system fill. Then, the float closes the vent when water reaches it. As a result, the system retains far less air at the water interface.
Why the Potter Electric Signal PAV matters
Trapped air drives corrosion in wet-pipe sprinkler piping. Specifically, the air/water interface is where corrosion activity concentrates. Therefore, removing system air protects pipe wall thickness and extends service life.
In addition, trapped air can delay vane-type waterflow detectors. Sometimes, it can prevent activation entirely. As a result, an air vent supports both corrosion control and faster waterflow alarm response.
NFPA 13 air venting requirement
The 2016 edition of NFPA 13 added section 7.1.5. Specifically, that section requires a single air vent on each wet-pipe system using metallic pipe. Furthermore, NFPA 13 section 8.16.6 lists three approved methods. The first option is a manual valve at 1/2 inch minimum. Alternatively, an automatic air vent may be used. Also, another approved means may satisfy the requirement. Therefore, the PAV satisfies the automatic air vent option for code compliance.
