Electrical Fire Hazards

For starters, what could catch on fire? You’ve got cash registers, computers, lights, air conditioning units and more in a store. Plus, you might have additional things like freezers, refrigerators and other appliances. All of these items could conceivably catch on fire. Basically, anything that uses electricity is susceptible to starting on fire. If and when an electric-powered item or machine malfunctions it may lead to fire. Therefore, check over anything plugged in to make sure the cords aren’t frayed, they’re plugged in properly and the circuit(s) aren’t overloaded with too many items plugged into one outlet.

Flammables

Besides electrical things at a store, you’ve got to watch out for flammables. These include piles of papers, chemicals, gasoline, etc.

Preparing Your Retail Store for Fires

Is your store prepared for a fire? Your retail store should have fire alarms that are in working condition. These alarms will alert anyone in the vicinity that there’s a problem and they should exit the building. Many stores use a fire alarm monitoring system which alerts the local fire department– that way they’ll know to come check on the place should the alarm go off. Additionally, it’s a good idea to have sprinklers in your store; They can combat larger fires with water or other means to quell a fire. You should also have a certain number of fire extinguishers in your building that are easily accessible and ready to use at a moment’s notice. Train people on how to use them.

Finally, make sure your retail store has emergency exit signs so people know where to exit the premises should an alarm sound. Emergency lights should also come on, in case it’s dark inside for whatever reason.
