The Edwards 878EX-G5 is an explosion-proof grille-type AC vibrating horn from the 870EX-Series AdaptaHorn family. Specifically, it operates on 24 V AC and is UL and cUL listed for use in hazardous (classified) locations. Furthermore, the housing is a NEMA Type 4X outdoor enclosure for general signaling in non-fire-alarm applications.
First, the corrosion-resistant epoxy finish protects the unit in chemically aggressive atmospheres. Then the explosion-proof outlet box and 3/4-inch NPT conduit connections complete the field wiring. As a result, the 878EX-G5 can be installed wherever a distinctive, loud audible signal is needed in a classified-location environment.
Hazardous-Location Classifications
Specifically, the 878EX-G5 is UL and cUL listed for the following hazardous locations:
- Class I, Division 1 and 2, Groups B, C, and D (flammable gases and vapors)
- Class II, Division 1 and 2, Groups F and G (combustible dusts — coal, carbon black, flour, grain)
- Class II, Division 1, Group E (combustible metal dusts)
- Class III, Division 1 and 2 (ignitable fibers and flyings)
Therefore, common deployment sites include petrochemical refineries, grain elevators, paint-spray booths, flour mills, and woodworking shops.
Verified Electrical Specifications
- Operating voltage: 24 V AC, 50/60 Hz
- Current: 0.625 A
- Sound output: 97 dB at 10 ft
- Voltage tolerance: -20% to +10% of nominal
Operating Environment
However, the UL hazardous-locations listing applies only within a specific ambient range. Specifically:
- UL hazardous-location range: -25°C to +40°C (-13°F to +104°F)
- Edwards-recommended minimum for audible function: -4°C (+25°F)
As a result, do not install the 878EX-G5 outside that ambient range without consulting Edwards.
Installation
Also, two mounting brackets are provided on either side of the unit for wall mounting. In addition, the housing is tapped on one side for 3/4-inch NPT conduit. Specifically:
- Mount with 3/8-inch diameter fasteners (NOT supplied)
- Two 3/4-14 NPT nipple connectors included on the outlet box
- Power source connections are made inside the explosion-proof outlet box
- Connect ground lead to earth ground
Furthermore, do NOT apply power until installation is complete and the cover is secured. The NEMA 4X enclosure applies to general signaling use in non-fire-alarm applications.

What This Part Is Not
However, the 878EX-G5 is NOT a fire-alarm notification appliance. Specifically, the manufacturer documentation states that “Outdoor Type 4X applies to general signaling use in non-fire alarm applications.” Therefore, do not specify the 878EX-G5 as a substitute for a fire-alarm hazardous-area horn unless the AHJ approves it on a case-by-case basis.
