The Protectowire PHSC-220-EPC-M is a fixed-temperature digital linear heat detector. Specifically, the cable activates at 220°F (105°C). Furthermore, the “-M” suffix means it ships pre-wound with stainless steel messenger wire. As a result, you can span open areas without continuous mounting surfaces.

How the Protectowire PHSC-220-EPC-M senses heat

The detector consists of two spring-tempered steel conductors. Then each conductor is individually insulated with a heat-sensitive polymer. The two insulated conductors are twisted together. As a result, polymer pressure keeps them apart at normal temperatures. When any point reaches 220°F, the polymer yields. Furthermore, the conductors snap together at that heated point. Therefore, the detector initiates an alarm at the first hot section anywhere along its length.

EPC jacket and messenger wire

EPC stands for extruded polyvinyl chloride. Also, the jacket is a durable flame-retardant vinyl. In addition, it offers low moisture absorption and chemical resistance. The maximum recommended ambient temperature is 175°F (79°C) per the data sheet.

The “-M” messenger wire is high-tensile-strength stainless steel. Specifically, the wire is wound around the detector at roughly one turn per foot. Furthermore, this carrier wire simplifies installation across cable trays, open bays, and outdoor spans.

Listed spacing

The UL/cUL listed spacing is 50 ft (15.2 m). Also, the FM listed spacing is 25 ft (7.6 m). For open-area UL 521 use, the recommended maximum ambient is 150°F (66°C). Therefore, layout planners must apply ceiling height, air movement, and obstruction factors.

Interface module required

The PHSC-220-EPC-M is NOT a direct-connect addressable SLC device. Specifically, it must terminate at a Protectowire PIM-120, PIM-230, or PIM-530 interface module. Then the interface module ties the run into the host fire alarm panel. Furthermore, a 2.2 kΩ end-of-line resistor supervises the loop.

Messenger wire install tips

Maximum detector length between turnbuckles should not exceed 250 ft (76 m). In addition, intermediate fasteners must support the wire every 15–50 ft. Outdoor runs need tighter intermediate spacing for snow, ice, and wind loads.
