The Edwards 960A-8SS is an 8-inch square surface speaker back box for indoor fire-alarm voice-communication systems. Specifically, it is the surface-mount counterpart to the 960A-8RF round flush box for 8-inch 964 and 965 Series ceiling speakers and speaker-strobes. Furthermore, it is constructed from satin-coat steel.

First, the 960A-8SS is square and sized for the 8-inch speaker baffle. Then it provides exposed surface mounting where flush installation is not practical. As a result, it suits retrofit projects, exposed-conduit installations, and walls or ceilings without recess pockets.

Specifically, the 960A-8SS pairs with these Edwards speakers and speaker-strobes:

• EST 964 Series — 8-inch 25 Vrms surface-mount speakers and speaker-strobes
• EST 965 Series — 8-inch 70 Vrms surface-mount speakers and speaker-strobes

Therefore, the box-and-device pair forms an integrated square surface install. As a result, the speaker baffle stands proud of the finished surface, and conduit can run exposed to the box.

What This Part Is

However, the 960A-8SS is a mounting accessory, NOT a stand-alone UL-listed appliance. Specifically, its agency listing is via the 964/965 Series speaker assembly it supports. Therefore, install it only with compatible Edwards speakers and speaker-strobes from the 964/965 family.

Also, the original product copy claimed “Material: High-impact electrical-grade polymer” and listings of “UL 464, UL 268.” Both are incorrect. As a result, this rewrite replaces them with the verified satin-coat steel construction and assembly-level UL listing.
