KIDDE (KI-OSD) Intelligent Optical Smoke Detector

The Kidde KI-OSD is an intelligent addressable optical smoke detector from the Kidde Intelligent Optica Series. Specifically, it uses multi-criteria optical sensing technology to reduce nuisance alarms in dusty, steamy, or otherwise variable environments. As a result, it suits commercial spaces that require both early warning and low false-alarm rates.

In addition, the KI-OSD communicates on a standard two-wire SLC loop. Therefore, it draws operating power and reports its status over the same pair of conductors.

How the Kidde KI-OSD Detects Smoke

First, the sensor uses two optical wavelengths instead of a single one. Then, it analyzes light scatter from multiple detection angles. As a result, the algorithm can tell common nuisance particulates (dust, steam, cooking aerosols) apart from genuine smoke.

Furthermore, the detector reports individually to the panel. Therefore, the system identifies the exact device in alarm, not just the zone.

Important Panel Compatibility Note

The KI-OSD operates ONLY with control panels that use a Kidde Intelligent Loop controller. Therefore, this detector is not interchangeable with detectors from other manufacturers or other Kidde product lines. Specifically, before ordering, confirm your panel uses a Kidde Intelligent Loop card.

In addition, European installations can use BESA boxes or 1-gang boxes with 60.3 mm fixing centers. However, always verify the depth of the box against the specific Kidde base being installed.
