The Simplex 4098-9601 is a TrueAlarm photoelectric smoke detector for conventional 2-wire and 4-wire initiating device circuits (IDCs). Unlike analog addressable detectors that report chamber values to the panel, the 4098-9601 uses an on-board microprocessor with TrueAlarm drift compensation to make its own alarm decision locally — providing intelligent detection on conventional IDC wiring without requiring an addressable loop controller.
The 4098-9601 uses a louvered chamber design that directs airflow to the photoelectric sensing element, improving smoke capture in open-air ceiling installations. Sensitivity is rated at a nominal 2.8%/ft obscuration (standard sensitivity). A magnetic test feature initiates a functional alarm and identifies general sensitivity status via the detector LED — allowing testing without aerosol or removing the head from the base.

The 4098-9601 has been discontinued by Simplex. The current replacement is the 4098-5601 photoelectric detector. Existing 4098-9601 units in service may remain per AHJ guidance, but base compatibility should be verified when substituting 4098-5601 heads on existing bases during replacements.
