Can Crock-Pots Catch on Fire?

‘This is Us’ Spoiler Alerts Below!

Crock-Pot Fire Hazards On a recent episode of the hit TV show, This Is Us, a fire took place as a result of a Crock-Pot. It was a very scary scene for many This Is Us viewers, and it wasn’t just because the Crock-Pot may potentially play a big role in the plot of the show. It was also because most people were under the impression that Crock-Pots couldn’t start a fire. That is one of the big appeals of using them. You’re supposed to be able to put food into a Crock-Pot, turn it on, and then let the food cook while you go out and handle your business without worrying.

The good news is that, in most cases, you don’t have to worry about your Crock-Pot catching on fire. After the This Is Us episode aired, Cooking Light reached out to Crock-Pot customer service, and a representative for the Crock-Pot company told them their products are safe for slow cooking foods. They did recommend placing your Crock-Pot on a hard and flat surface while cooking. They also recommended keeping the power cord for the Crock-Pot away from the edge of the surface. But in general, they said you won’t have to worry about your Crock-Pot randomly catching on fire.

That being said, there is always going to be a small risk anytime you are using electricity and heat, especially if you have a Crock-Pot that is on the older side. In This Is Us, the Crock-Pot that was used was old and malfunctioned. So if you have a Crock-Pot that is more than 10 or 15 years old, you might want to consider replacing it with a newer model. You also might want to inspect your Crock-Pot for any signs of wear and tear. If an electrical cord doesn’t seem to be in good condition or you notice that anything else seems off, it’s not a bad idea to consider replacing your Crock-Pot right away.

You should also make sure you have a fire alarm or smoke detector located near your kitchen area. No matter how safe you might think your Crock-Pot is, a fire alarm or smoke detector will add an extra line of defense in the event something goes wrong.
