Simplex 631-114 Baffle for Duct Smoke Detector Housings
The Simplex 631-114 is the replacement baffle for Simplex duct smoke detector housings 4098-9681, 4098-9752, and 4098-9753. Simplex also catalogs this part as 4098-9826. Both numbers refer to the same baffle.
The baffle snaps into the baffle slot inside the duct housing cover. As a result, the housing meets the airflow geometry the detector needs to sample duct air correctly.
What the Simplex 631-114 Does
Duct smoke detectors sample air flowing through an HVAC duct to detect smoke. First, an inlet tube draws duct air into the housing. Then the baffle inside the cover guides that air past the detector head before it exits through the exhaust tube. Therefore the baffle is required for the duct detector to work — the Simplex installation sheet (574-710) states explicitly that the housing must not be operated without it.
Where the Simplex 631-114 Is Used
Use the 631-114 (4098-9826) baffle with these Simplex duct smoke detector housings:
- 4098-9681 — non-addressable duct housing, used with the 4098-9601 photoelectric detector
- 4098-9752 — addressable MAPNET II / IDNet duct housing, used with the 4098-9714 photo sensor
- 4098-9753 — addressable MAPNET II / IDNet duct housing with auxiliary relay, used with the 4098-9714 photo sensor
Also, the baffle is marked with the compatible detector/sensor part numbers (4098-9601 and 4098-9714) so a technician can confirm fit during installation.
When to Replace the Baffle
The baffle ships with each new duct housing. However, replacement may be needed after a housing service, a cover swap, or if the original baffle is lost or damaged. In addition, the baffle should be checked during routine duct detector maintenance — the installation sheet recommends annual cleaning of the sampling tube and detector entry areas.
