The Protectowire MFL-92 is a manual fault locator system for linear heat detector cable. It finds and pinpoints the overheated or shorted spot on a Protectowire run. As a result, technicians can locate a fault without guesswork.
The system uses two handheld modules. First, the FDG-92 Tone Generator connects to the detector circuit. Then, the FDR-92 Tone Receiver and its pickup head explore along the cable. Therefore, the tone strength guides the tech to the fault.
How the MFL-92 Locates a Fault
The generator injects a tone into the shorted detector. As the pickup head moves along the cable, the tone rises and falls. However, past the short the tone disappears. That point marks the location of the fault.
The receiver sounds a 700 Hz tone, or a dual 700-1000 Hz tone. Specifically, a selector switch chooses single or dual tone. In addition, an optional earphone helps in noisy areas.
