The Protectowire PHSC-280-EPC-M is a high-temperature fixed-point digital linear heat detector. Specifically, the cable activates at 280°F (138°C). Furthermore, the “-M” suffix means it ships pre-wound with stainless steel messenger wire. As a result, you can run detection through hot industrial bays without continuous mounting surfaces.

How the Protectowire PHSC-280-EPC-M senses heat

The detector uses two spring-tempered steel conductors. Then each conductor carries heat-sensitive polymer insulation. The conductors are twisted together for spring pressure. As a result, the polymer holds them apart at normal ambient temperatures. When any point reaches 280°F, the polymer yields. Furthermore, the conductors make contact at that heated section. Therefore, the cable signals an alarm at the first hot point anywhere along the run.

Why the 280°F rating

Protectowire is offered in multiple alarm temperatures. Specifically, the 280°F model targets installations with elevated normal ambient conditions. Also, the maximum recommended ambient is 200°F (93°C) per the data sheet. Therefore, this variant suits engine rooms, kilns, ovens, and industrial process areas.

EPC jacket and messenger wire

EPC is an extruded polyvinyl chloride flame-retardant vinyl jacket. In addition, the jacket offers low moisture absorption and chemical resistance. The “-M” messenger wire is high-tensile stainless steel. Furthermore, it wraps the detector at roughly one turn per foot.

Listed spacing

The UL/cUL listed spacing is 50 ft (15.2 m). Also, the FM listed spacing is 25 ft (7.6 m). Therefore, layout planners must reduce spacing for ceiling height, air movement, and obstructions.

Interface module required

The PHSC-280-EPC-M is not directly compatible with addressable SLCs. Specifically, it must terminate at a Protectowire PIM-120, PIM-230, or PIM-530 interface module. Then the interface module connects to the host fire alarm panel. Furthermore, a 2.2 kΩ end-of-line resistor supervises the run.
