The POTTER VSR-4 is a vane-type waterflow switch for 4-inch sprinkler pipe. It detects sustained water flow in wet-pipe sprinkler systems. As a result, the fire alarm panel sees an alarm condition when a sprinkler head opens.
A flexible vane projects into the flow path through the saddle clamp. Specifically, the vane deflects when water moves through the pipe. Therefore, the deflection actuates the switch mechanism inside the housing.
How the POTTER VSR-4 Signals an Alarm
First, water flow deflects the vane against spring tension. Then, a built-in pneumatic retard delays the alarm signal. As a result, momentary surges from pressure changes do not trigger nuisance alarms. Furthermore, sustained flow exceeding the retard time produces the alarm signal to the panel. The retard is adjustable in the field to tune for system conditions.

Important Compatibility Notes
Waterflow switch installation requires matching to your pipe outer diameter and schedule. For example, 4-inch nominal pipe varies in actual OD between Schedule 10 and Schedule 40. Therefore, confirm your pipe specification before ordering. Also, the VSR-4 is for wet-pipe systems — dry-pipe and pre-action installations need a different switch type (Potter VSR-S or equivalent).
